Scouting is an international organisation started by
Baden Powell on 29th July,
1907, on Brownsea Island. He formed scouts because he
wanted young boys (girls guides was formed by his wife later) to have the
opportunity to meet others, go on camping trips and enjoy themselves, whilst
also enforcing a level of discipline and order. He encouraged self pride and
dignity, along with respect for leaders, each other and themselves.
Nowadays, scouts learn about all the traditional things, - knots, ropes, tents, cooking, but they also attend more adventurous feats, such as rock-climbing, parachuting, paragliding, caving, and even international exploration and exchange.
Modern day Scouting is far adventurous compared to the times of Baden Powell as we tend to go abroad on a regular basis to gain insight into other cultures and religions opening the eyes of us all!
